YENIKAPI TRANSFER POINT AND ARCHAEO-PARK AREA INTERNATIONAL PRELIMINARY ARCHITECTURE PROJECT

So as to obtain the “Yenikapi Transfer Point and Archaeopark Area” Project, for which a project application was submitted to the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency by Directorate of Projects in Department of Study and Projects of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality a contract was signed with  Boğaziçi Engineering Consultancy Inc. (BIMTAS) in 22.10.2010. Today the project has been one of the most important Urban Vision Projects of (executed by) the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul.

Within the process, considering the values of the project area which includes multiple factors and has a complicated structure, the method of “Service Procurement for Provision of Architectural Preliminary Project from Pre-selected and Invited International Architects” was chosen.

The Project Area subject to service procurement is connected within its immediate proximity by the Aksaray-Airport Metro, Taksim-Yenikapi Metro (which is one of the most important ailroad systems for the Istanbul Metropolis and located in Istanbul Historical Peninsula), the Marmaray Rail Tube Tunnel which connects European and Anatolian sides and Istanbul Sea Bus terminal (İDO). The purpose of the Marmaray transport system is to provide continuous transportation via the rail system from one end of Istanbul to the other by connecting Gebze on the Anatolian side to Halkali on the European side.

Excavations undertaken during the application of the transportation projects, both the remains of a 1600-year-old “Theodosius Port” together with the “35 antique ship remains” of the World’s largest fleet collection and more than 10.000 archeological foundings were unearthed. At the same excavation area, 8500-years-old settlements of first Neolithic age were also found.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR OF ISTANBUL METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITY

Kadir Topbaş

Our Istanbul is unique in being a globally cultural, economical and commercial generator metropolis located in the intersection of Asia and Europe. Furthermore, Istanbul has a rich abundance of historical and cultural values due to having been the capital city of three past civilizations. In this context, we are rapidly planning the changing locational strategies of our time for our city.

As part of our joint operation with 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency which was initiated in 2008 today with the collective work of Department of Study and Projects and BIMTAS (Boğaziçi Engineering Consultancy Inc.), Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has entered an important process for the “Yenikapi Transfer Point and Archaeo-Park Area” project.

Yenikapi Transfer Center is one of the most important points of the transportation system of Istanbul. Once having arrived in Yenikapi, one will able to reach every point of our city by rail and public transportation systems. Thus, we have also initiated the work of reviewing and renewing the urban functions and relationships in the territory.

The new centralization brought on by an increase of accessibility in Yenikapi has the potential of influencing the seaway, airway and highway dynamics of the metropolis as well as urban development and renewal at a metropolitan scale.

Being an area which will include a multitude of rich functions and relationships, Yenikapi will serve as the “new gateway” of the metropolis in the exact sense of the word. To this end, we are working diligently in order to bring forward urban vision and design proposals by considering the future impact of centralization incurred by the increased rate of accessibility on a metropolitan scale and to plan the process which will realize the potential of such an important area in both urban, functional and historical terms providing the best outcomes for Istanbul and its citizens.

It is for this purpose, through a Pre-Selective-Invitational project procurement process, that we welcome the opportunity in opening the project to both national and international highly experienced urban designers and architects.

We are looking forward to the projects to be developed by you for “Yenikapi Transfer Point and Archaeo-Park Area” and wish you every success in this process.

Kadir Topbaş
